About The Bearded Candle Makers
Our goal is to create incredible candles that each tell a story. As a business, over the last 8 years we have consciously grown organically by reinvesting into the business year on year. We are proudly independent and will continue to grow at a pace that suits the world around us first and only then our lifestyles. What started out as a one man operation 8 years ago is now a small team of dreamers, thinkers and candle makers. As we grow so does our promise to sustainability for our planet, keeping our environmental policies at the core of every decision.
Local community is at the heart of the business too, when we opened the studio doors for our first free scent talk, we realised how many values we share with our customers and since then we have converted the front of the studio into a shop. We love meeting and talking with our customers, while undoubtedly they are getting barked at by one of our dogs.
We want to continue doing what we love. Taking inspiration from the world around us and the world of stories we surround our imaginations with and making them into candles. From the feedback we get about our products, people really connect with the stories and we live for that. Hearing back from customers about their experiences and some even head off to the places we mention to connect that way too. It's all about people and connection.

We proudly make each candle by hand in our gorgeous studio in Castlewellan. We prepare each jar, place the wick, pour and label each one. From start to finish, each element of the candle making process is done in-house and never outsourced or bought in. We start by cleaning each jar ready to use. Then using a new wick placing device we individually place each wick using a custom heat proof adhesive. From there we begin to pour (having melted the wax, blended and then poured the scent). After a lot of research each candle is poured with a single pour of wax, giving a consistent and scent throw and even burn. Once poured we secure the wick and leave to cure. With our soy wax each candle is given two weeks minimum to sit in order for the scent to cure fully. We then number the batch, and clean the jars again ready for labelling. There are a few tricks of the trade that we do in between some of these steps, but we’ll keep them to ourselves.
Having invested in multiple natural candle wax specific melters - we have an unparalleled level of control when making each batch. On any given day, we will make a single batch of a candle with one scent blend. This means when we open the front doors, the whole town will know what candle has been poured.
What sets us apart from other Candle Makers
Many makers use pre-made scent blends, we don’t! When we say we create a scent inspired by a specific memory or place - we really mean it. Some scents in our collection took months to get right. Sometimes we call in help from previous tutors from France or simply keep changing each iteration of scent profiles until they are right. We even revisit parts of Ireland to get a better feel of a place at different times of year to catch something we may have missed. This is a true labour of love, it really is. We believe in creating a scent that truly connects to a place and time. Not simply using a pre-made scent and hoping it is close enough. This does make the legal classification harder but we work with a fantastic team to ensure each batch is perfect.
We work really closely with local artists to develop the branding too. We love this novel approach. Not only does each artist bring a new view of their own to our company, we really feel it's important and a privilege to support artists and pay them well. So far we have worked with Rhea Hanlon, Paula O’Hara and O.S Illustrations. Each of these artists are power houses of creativity and we are so thankful for the work they did for us and to top it all off, our customers love what they have each brought to our company.
We embrace a slow and organic approach to candle making as a business. Having continually reinvested in the business over the last 8 years, we have learned the hard way to fully embrace what sets us apart and enjoy the journey. A great example of this is our hand dipped candles. A slow and methodical process that can never be sped up. We hand tie each wick onto the ‘jigs’ (that we had custom made by a french metalsmith) and start the meditative process of hand dipping each pair up to 40 times. A process that we love. Whereas many companies don’t see the value in the time it takes to make this style of candle - they will simply buy in machine made, mass produced candles - made with questionable wax. We have embraced this process with a big hug and genuinely love it.
