A Real Turf Fire - aka The Peat Candle

A Real Turf Fire — The Scent of Home (An Irish Peat Fire in a Jar)
Bring the quiet glow of an Irish hearth into your home—soft smoke, warm embers, and that unmistakable turf comfort. A hug in a jar if ever there was one.

There’s a particular feeling that comes on when turf catches: a low crackle, a curl of sweet smoke, and an amber warmth that settles the room. A Real Turf Fire is our love letter to that feeling—poured by hand, blended with care, and designed to evoke the calm glow of an Irish hearth on a cool evening.
What does “A Real Turf Fire” smell like?
Think warm hearth, soft peat smoke, and settled embers—rounded by gentle notes of seasoned wood and hints of earthiness. It’s comforting rather than harsh: more cardigan than campfire.
- Top: Gentle smoke curl, cool evening air
- Heart: Peat-rich warmth, dried heather, seasoned timber
- Base: Ambered embers, mossy earth, a soot-softened sweetness
The story & memory behind the scent
Inspired by evenings in Donegal, both in cosy pubs or a hidden cottage we found on Airbnb. That first hint of peat smoke you smell on the road to Donegal. I always think of the dogs asleep on their beds around the fire. We poured all of that into this jar so you can light it and feel at home—wherever you are.
How we built the blend
We start with a clean-burning soy wax and layer in carefully balanced fragrance notes that capture peat’s signature character without the acrid edge. The result is a soft, lived-in smokiness that never overwhelms a room.
Why it works: true-to-life peat nuances; rounded woods; a touch of cedar; and earthy facets for that freshly stoked, slow-burn feeling.
When to burn it
- Evenings in: pair with a book, soft music, and a thick blanket.
- Gatherings: a cosy backdrop for dinner with friends.
- Homesickness: light it when you miss Ireland—instant hearth.
The perfect Irish gift
Loved by expats and anyone who’s fallen for Ireland, this candle is a thoughtful housewarming, birthday, or Christmas gift. Add a handwritten note and it becomes a keepsake of place and memory.

Candle care for the best burn
- First burn: let wax melt edge-to-edge (≈ 2–3 hours) to set an even memory.
- Trim the wick: to ~5mm before each burn for a clean, steady flame.
- Room size: ideal for small–medium rooms; for open-plan spaces, light two.
- Safety: never leave unattended; keep away from drafts & curious paws.
Frequently asked questions
Does it smell like a campfire?
Not quite. Campfires can be sharper and drier. Turf smoke is rounder and sweeter, with earthy, ambered warmth. We’ve captured that gentler profile.
Will it make my room smell too smoky?
We’ve balanced the blend to be cosy, not overpowering. Start with shorter burns and build to your preferred strength.
Is this a good Christmas candle?
Yes. It layers beautifully with festive scents—think spiced orange or pine—adding depth and a fireside glow to winter gatherings.
Do you ship to the UK & Ireland?
Yes, we ship across the UK & Ireland. Delivery timeframes display at checkout.
